My favorite years for Bill Evans were 1965 and '66. There's a maturity, elegance and confidence in his playing that reached a peak then, as well as an innocence and humility that makes the music endearing. Though researchers in the 1980s uncovered information showing that Armstrong's true date of birth was in fact August 4, 1901, the tradition of celebrating his birthday along with the nation's on the Fourth of July continues to this day. Of course, Armstrong's legacy would be worth honoring ...

Rifftides observes the 4th of July with two versions of the song that many Americans wish was the national anthem. Pianist Clare Fischer arranged the first for his 1967 album Songs For Rainy Day Lovers. The second version is by tenor saxophonist Al Cohn with Barry Harris, piano; Sam Jones, bass; and Leroy Williams, drums. footnote: Al Cohn recorded “America The Beautiful” in 1976 as part ...

JazzWax by Marc Myers
Russ Freeman was one of the most recorded ensemble pianists on the West Coast in the 1950s and one of the most poetic. His first recording was with Charlie Parker at a Los Angeles club in 1947, but once the LP made inroads in the early 1950s, Freeman recorded steadily with Chet Baker, John Graas, Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Shelly Manne and many other artists. Freeman died in 2002 at age 75. Here are a few clips of Freeman's pretty ...
