Manfred Eicher and ECM Win Downbeat 2009 Award

Echoing the results of last year's poll, Manfred Eicher and ECM are voted Producer of the Year and Label of the Year in the 57th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll. This double-win is announced in the August issue of the venerable US jazz magazine (founded 1934). The awards arrive in ECM's 40th anniversary year. It was in the autumn of 1969 that Eicher founded his label; seven years later, in 1976, he won DownBeat's Top Producer award for the first time. ...

Eugene Register-Guard: Top Jazz Label Has Local Origins

From The Register-Guard (Eugene, OR): Although it’s based in Seattle, JazzWeek magazine’s “jazz label of the year” has Eugene’s fingerprints all over it. Origin Records bested Concord Records, Palmetto, Sunnyside, Heads Up and HighNote Records to take the prize in late June. The winner was announced at the JazzWeek Conference held during the Rochester Jazz Festival. The label’s founder, drummer John Bishop, accepted the award. In an announcement that combines kudos to one company, a jab at another and a warning flare for producers, the American Cinema Editors board of directors is honoring Avid's Media Composer software with the org's first-ever ACE Technical Excellence Award. Mario Pavone Receives Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant

Mario Pavone, internationally respected bassist, Litchfield Performing Arts, Inc. board member, and Litchfield Jazz Camp teacher, has been awarded a 2009 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant. The grant is focused on commissioning new music and on ensemble development. He was one of a handful of recipients chosen from a pool of 161 applications. Up to my ears in curricular and non-curricular matters since my return from New York, I may or may not get around to writing more about last week's Jazz Journalists Association awards afternoon. In the meantime, Arnold Jay Smith posted a lively summary on Ted Gioia's jazz.com blog. In his lead paragraph, he alludes to the demise in the past few months of of several jazz magazines, including Jazz Times, Coda and Jazz Review.
