Alyn Shipton Wins 'Jazz Writer of the Year' Award

Alyn Shipton has won the award for 'Jazz Writer of the Year' for his New History of Jazz in the British Hamlet Jazz Awards. The prize was presented at the Pizza on the Park ceremony by Humphrey Lyttelton, who described the book as 'the definitive history of jazz'.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 7, 2002 -- Vernon Alley, the legendary jazz bassist who has played a major role in San Francisco's jazz scene since the 1940s, will receive the San Francisco State University Presidential Medal this year.
