Music was the second most-funded category behind film & video last year, according to stats just shared by Kickstarter. In total, music projects rallied $19,801,685 (and 21 cents), a healthy chunk of nearly $100 million in pledges in 2011. That is more than triple the volume, though we don't have a music-specific breakdown from 2010.

A planned film collaboration between Matthew Shipp and Barbara Januszkiewicz has entered its initial search for funding via Kickstarter. The American Jazz Museum has graciously agreed to extend its support to this collaboration so that supporters will be eligible for a charitable deduction. Kickstarter is now celebrating its 10,000th successfully-funded project—and 3,110 of them are music-related. In fact, music is the most successful category, just barely edging out film and television.

Kickstarter turned two years old today and shared some stats that show just how important their fan funding platform has been to d.i.y.  music and the new music economy. Overall $53,107,672 has been pledged and $40 million collected to fund 7496 successful Kickstarter projects. Of that, $13,094,547 went to fund music related projects.
