This is the point where, for those of us that are “all nine day"-ers, the collision with the working week begins and the (usually) late nights of Friday-Sunday are beginning to take their toll. Again, as usual, it spans the world of jazz and jazz in the world. The links below on the artists' name ...

Vision Festival 16: A Focus On The Panel Discussions

Source: Chris Rich
June 3, 2011

Vision Festival 16 begins, as it generally does, with some discussion. These events tend to get shorter shrift in what passes for coverage but they speak to conditions well. The short shrift problem in some form or another is endemic and has been since jazz became the runt of the music industry without even the pious cloak of cultural sanctimony and fat budgets worn by classical. It is okay for classical to be an utter stiff in every way as ...

June 2, 2011

Striving to live up to its boast as “Africa's grandest gathering" the 2011 edition of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival presented a rich cornucopia of sounds—including jazz, jazz extensions and jazz cousins in a colorful melange. Being an inveterate crowd watcher comes with the territory for those who present jazz, and particularly jazz festivals, and your corespondent is no exception. Strolling the halls and adjacent outdoor byways of the spiffy Cape Town International Convention Centre (largest of its kind ...

June 1, 2011

For 18 years, Kevin Eubanks and his guitar came right into America's living room through the television set. On Thursday, the former music director of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" will bring his eclectic musical interests, tight-knit band and, yes, his guitar to the Civic Center Music Hall to perform as part of the 26th annual Charlie Christian International Music Festival. “Our concert is probably more energetic than people think, and we like to play. And I think it ...

Lineage and Vision Festival 16: June 5-11

So much of our experience is increasingly place-less as franchise smiles crafted by human resources consultants greet us daily no matter what the biome or weight of memory. The fast food smile and store floor uniform must ever be the same. Crowd counts displace quality practices with childlike aspirations toward some eternal Superbowl as the only metric that matters.

But really. That's for people who are determined to make lots of money and everyone gets what they pay for. Vision ...
