Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival is Killer
Source:
RJ on Jazz by R.J. DeLuke
Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival (check it ouuuuut ) in Saratoga Springs, NY, is a great event every year, the ultimate jazz picnic, good-time hang of any festival you'll find. Anywhere. People who show up year after year, are great music fans with great loyalty to the fest. They'll enjoy it no matter what. This year, producer Danny Melnick, in conjunction with the Saratoga Performing Arts center where the event has been held every summer since 1978 (stop using your fingers—this ...

It is About Who You Don't Know on June 15th of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (Well Mostly...)
Source:
Jazz@Rochester
Wednesday's artists (at least those who are not active on the local and regional scene) at the Rochester jazz festival are, for the most part, squarely in the “who I don't know" part of festival music director's John Nugent's “It's not who you know, it's who you don't know" catchphrase for the XRIJF.However, that does not leave me feeling lost, but rather (at least for me) allows more freedom to choose where to sit down and listen. It also is ...

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be My Picks for Day Five of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival
Source:
Jazz@Rochester
Tuesday at the XRIJF includes some familiar returning names and some new to me...just another night at the festival. This evening will be one that I float through and perhaps make changes midstream (for me, that can also be just another night at the festival). I'm keeping my main picks to 3, but it is not because there are slim pickings. As you will see below there is just too much to choose, at least when you're trying to soak ...

Vision Festival 16 Opening Night; Echoes of Ascension, Marion Brown and John Tchicai.
Source:
Chris Rich
Having covered the Panel Discussion for Sunday the music needs its due. Where else but the Vision Festival, in the US at least, would you find a night given to two participants in that legendary extended fanfare the world knows as Ascension. One still works among us, John Tchicai, and the other left us since Vision Festival last conveved. Marion Brown was a wonder. He was among the early inventors of mixed medium work incorporating poetry, visual arts and the ...

The Lead Sheet: Twin Cities Jazz, June 3-23
Source:
JazzINK by Andrea Canter
OK, call this the “pre-festival lead sheet" as it is the only one I will be posting before Twin Cities Jazz Festival weekend. I'm heading west for 12 days of driving, hiking, camping, driving, hiking....no laptop, no email. Plenty of jazz but all on CD. So for the most part, this is a preview of what I will miss. Go and tell me all about it later! The local jazz calendar, as complete as any, can now be found on ...
