Only 22% of High Schoolers Want to Pay 99 Cents a Song

Source: HypeBot

How does the 99¢ song fair among high school students? Not very well, according to a new study by Piper Jaffray. Only 22% of the 4,500 participants said they'd consider paying 99¢ for a track. In contrast, 65% use P2P services to get music for free, with a mere 35% indicating that they purchase music from an online store, which is often iTunes. From Fall of 2007 until now, interest in 99¢ song has averaged out to 22%. Frankly, it ...

9 Reasons Apple and Google Should Be Worried About Amazon

Source: HypeBot

This guest post comes from Paul Lamere of The Echo Nest and his blog Music Machinery. For the last year we've heard rumors of how both Apple and Google were getting close to releasing music locker services that allow music listeners to upload their music collection to the cloud giving them the ability to listen to their music everywhere. So it was a big surprise when the first major Internet player to launch a music locker service wasn't Google or ...

Facebook is Not the Sales Tool You'd Hoped For [chart]

Source: HypeBot

It's pretty well proven that Facebook is a great way to find fans and communicate with them. But is it also a great place to sell? Some music commerce services like Moontoast have made Facebook sales tools their lead products, but a new Goldman Sachs survey shows that social networks may not be a major driver of sales... at least not yet.  The Chart: According to the survey, social sites led by Facebook have very little influence over online shopping ...

Is This Going Somewhere? Rhapsody's Grown 15% in Just One Year...

Source: Digital Music News

It's easy to write Rhapsody off as a hopeless niche play. In fact, that's exactly what JV partners RealNetworks and MTV Networks did one year ago. Yet oddly enough, that's just about when things started to grow! Today, Rhapsody celebrates its first year of independence (no, this isn't a formerlycolonized island nation), and its newfound freedom has powered a 15 percent gain in subscribers. The numbers? As of today, subscribers stand at 750,000, a beef-up of 100,000 over twelve months. ...

Most of the participants saying 'yes' wanted major label deals, but does that mean that major deals “rock"? Well, according to the RIAA, that's exactly the conclusion we should be making. Does Pandora Imbue Impulsive Behavior?

Does Pandora Imbue Impulsive Behavior?

Source: HypeBot

In the past several months, I've spent lots of time using Pandora. Due to this, I've wondered if Pandora imbues impulsivity in us like email does. The reason why email is addicting is because it comes at varied times. In this sense, email is like a slot machine. We keep “pulling the lever" in hopes that coins, i.e. important emails, will dump out. We don't win every time we play, but usually its often enough to keep us going and ...

ASCAP Revenues Fall 6%

Source: HypeBot

A report just released by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) shows a 6% drop revenue in 2010 to $935 million. Despite the decline ASCAP paid out $845 million in distributions to members, a decline of just 2.1%.  They blamed the fall in revenue on the slower economy and court setbacks which lowered certain royalty rates. ASCAP said that it operates on a 13.9% expense ratio thanks to new technologies.  In the statement, ASCAP claimed that “no other ...
