Interview: Jim Hall (Part 3)
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
When Jim Hall left the Jimmy Giuffre Trio in 1961, he was a new guitarist. Jim's extended period with Giuffre helped him develop a new way to slur notes on the instrument's neck rather than relying solely on the pick. This blending technique would come in handy on the monumental albums he would record in the years that followed.
Between 1959 and 1965, Jim recorded six albums with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond that remain among the finest small-group jazz tracks ...

Interview: Jim Hall (Part 2)
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
In the late 1950s, Jim Hall was a founding member of two of the decade's most forward-thinking chamber jazz groups: the Chico Hamilton Quintet and the Jimmy Giuffre Trio. Both groups fused West Coast jazz with classical sensibilities, resulting in a swinging sound that was both breezy and ferociously competitive. The music at first seems genteel, but a closer listen reveals artistic engagements that are more akin to a cage fight between rocket scientists. In these challenging groups, Jim ...

Bernstein and Schuller in the Third Stream
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
"Third Stream" seems a quaint term nearly half a century after it kicked up a bit of a fuss in jazz and classical circles. Still, it never quite goes away, as the recent Eric Dolphy posting reminded me. Two of the names that remain associated with the movement are Gunther Schuller and Leonard Bernstein. Several years ago, I wrote about Schuller's central role in creation of the term and implementation of the concept. It was in a review of a ...

Onward with Ruth Price

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Even before the recession, the business side of jazz was struggling. During the worst of the downturn, singer and nonprofit entrepreneur Ruth Price took a double hit when her Jazz Bakery lost its lease. The club is still looking for a home. Reporter Greg Burk tells the story in today's Los Angeles Times.
The Jazz Bakery is a nonprofit organization. To followers of the scene, that statement is a redundancy, of course. In Los Angeles, saying a jazz club doesn't ...Continue Reading
Interview: Jim Hall (Part 1)
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Jim Hall sounds like your heart. Whether the guitarist is playing in a medium-sized group or just a duo, your ear is instantly drawn to the hushed pulse of his tasteful chords and notes. There's a tenderness and shyness to Jim's playing that makes your soul want to seek him out, like the person at a party you're hosting who's off by himself because he doesn't know anyone.
Jim in the mid-1950s re-invented the jazz guitar. Or put differently, he ...

Metal Machine Trio's Ulrich Krieger Interviewed at AAJ

All About Jazz
Lou Reed's 1975 release Metal Machine Music--often referred to as MMM"--is one of the most notorious and misunderstood albums in rock history. Its four sides of guitar feedback were not well received by Reed fans used to songs and vocals. The album was critically panned and withdrawn three weeks after release. In the years that followed, the album gradually acquired cult status, as others listened to the album at length and digested its contents. MMM spawned categories such as noise" ...

The incomparable Mose Allison has just released his new album The Way Of The World, his first studio album in twelve years. Allison is one of the true originals, an essential element in the evolution of contemporary music. Guided by Grammy winning producer Joe Henry, The Way of the World has all the acerbic subversive wit and effortless blues infused ...
