Source:
The Latin Jazz Corner by Chip Boaz
The history of jazz is broad and varied, staged in various locations across the United States; strangely enough, the history of Latin Jazz is written in one area. During the birth of jazz, Jelly Roll Morton claimed the Latin Tinge was an essential part of the music, a fact which was de-emphasized until the Big 3 Orchestras rocked New York's Palladium with massive mambos. As history followed Latin Jazz, New York remained the focus, continuing to be written through the ...

Gary Burton on John Gray
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Yesterday, in my post on trombonist Bob Flanigan and guitarist John Gray, I wondered what became of Gray. A large gap exists in his discography between 1947 and 1956, and his recording career ends abruptly in 1968. Curious, I reached out to vibraphonist Gary Burton [pictured], who played with Gray in George Shearing's quintet in the early 1960s. But first, a little background from the liner notes of The New Wave (1962), John Gray's only leadership date: George Shearing was ...

The Intrepid Mr. Demos.

Brilliant Corners, a Boston Jazz Blog
Chrys 'Kit" Demos drives 113 miles, each way, for his gigs here at the Outpost. He is only surpassed by Mr. Morris, who drives 150 miles. Kit sometimes brings his daughter along and she has the ability to stretch across several folding chairs and nap while the ensemble churns away. He has much in common with the regional artists in that he has a day job and he's justifiably proud of it, teaching Math and Science in the Maine Public ...

Bob Flanigan and John Gray
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Most fans of Four Freshmen recordings know Bob Flanigan as one of the group's founding members. Formed at Butler University in Indianapolis in early 1948, the singing quartet began as Hal's Harmonizers and was initially comprised of Hal Kratzsch, Marvin Pruitt and brothers Don and Ross Barbour. When Pruitt left, the Barbour brothers' cousin Bob Flanigan replaced him, and the group adapted a jazzier vocal harmony style. They changed their name to the Four Freshmen and began touring, catching the ...
