Dave Pell (1925-2017)

Dave Pell, a Los Angeles tenor saxophonist who was instrumental in promoting the West Coast's contrapuntal jazz sound that emerged in the early 1950s through his leadership of his many octets and who owned one of Lester Young's two saxophones, died May 8. He was 92. Dave was a dear and remarkably upbeat and cheery friend. A call to his home in Canoga Park, Calif., would invariably lead to stories about the jazz life in Hollywood in the 1950s, punctuated ...

Interview: Jan Persson

Back in May, I posted on a Bill Evans Trio rehearsal in Denmark in 1966 that was captured on tape for TV broadcast. In the TV studio that day was Evans on piano; Eddie Gomez on bass; Alex Riel, a Danish drummer; cameramen; and a director. There also was a photographer. His name was Jan Persson. Last week I caught up with Jan to chat about his career, how he happened to be in the studio with Evans that day ...

Interview: Meredith d'Ambrosio

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Yesterday I was listening to Meredith d'Ambrosio accompany herself on piano while singing Love Is a Simple Thing. The song appears on her sterling album Another Time (1981), which is one of my favorites of hers. Meredith and I have emailed for years, since she loves JazzWax and I love her voice and piano. As I listened, I thought I'd give you a treat by uniting five parts of my 2009 interview with Meredith in a single post. As I'm ...

Interview: Elliot Lawrence

Interview: Elliot Lawrence

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've long loved Elliot Lawrence's music. His big band recordings of the late 1940s and 1950s had superb swing and sensitivity, especially on Gerry Mulligan arrangements. The band was tight, well rehearsed and always loaded with the best musicians in the business. After my last post on Elliot back in August, singer Marlene VerPlanck sent me a kudos email and suggested I give Elliot a call. So I did. One thing led to the next and I did an old ...
