It feels cold again but really it just normal February in Minnesota! Our options in jazz are perhaps even warmer than normal this week, which might cause some frustration as we can't be in two venues at once. We have some amazing talents visiting (Ben Allison Trio, Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane, Matthew Garrison, Bruce Barth) as well as our always-great array of local artists, including the too-rarely heard Phil Hey Quartet. Big Gigs This Week Friday, February 3. Cellist Greg ...

Veronica Swift was born with jazz in her blood. It sounds like singing in the genre comes as natural to her as breathing. Swift, the 22-year-old daughter of singer Stephanie Nakasian and the late bebop pianist Hod O'Brien, was first runner-up in 2015's prestigious Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition. She graduated last month from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music with a Bachelor in Music, majoring in jazz voice. On Friday, January 24, she shared her artistry with ...

Also a shout out to my parents (age 94 and 95) celebrating their 71st anniversary on January 27, who are fully responsible for ...

Pianist Frederick Moyer, who has played in over 40 countries; at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Sydney Opera House; and with the Cleveland, Boston, and Philadelphia Orchestras, brings a decidedly unique program to the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California, on January 29th at 4:30 p.m. Blending his classical training with his passion for jazz, Mr. Moyer, with Jeff Denson (bass) and Dillon Vado (drums), will offer selections that he himself transcribed from recordings of the great jazz pianists. ...

Drummer Eddie Metz Jr. brought his mighty International Trio plus tenor saxophonist Harry Allen to Sarasota FL to provide a musical balm to Inauguration Day on Thursday, January 20. We're glad your here rather than at home cheering or yelling at the TV," Metz said at the outset. We don't care what side you're on because this is the universal language of music." This trio truly is international in scope, teaming American Metz with Australian bassist-singer Nicki Parrott and Italian ...

Just a week ago it was way below zero; now it's all melting. I think some of the credit goes to the hot jazz in the Twin Cities! And it will be hot enough to keep things above freezing as we head into another week filled with great jazz from one end of the metro to the other, from local heroes to visiting artists. And it's all a warm-up for the Twin Cities Winter Jazz Festival at the end of ...
