In some ways I think that a recording is the best medium for this music. I can think of a lot of music that speaks better on a recording than it does in a club where the environment and the audience's expectations exert an effect on the music. Listening to Anderson's four compositions, Doran's piece, four free improvisations, and an Ellington tune, from the two sessions strike me as collages of a sort, bringing together very different aesthetics, directions, and materials, for a direct confrontation. Not a confrontational confrontation, mind you.
