It's easy to dismiss the Grammy's as representing the old school music industry. But its also true that indie musicians have won many awards in recent years and that recognition has help to build awarness and sales. So if you choose to enter the Grammy sweepstakes, here's a How To Guide To Submitting Your Music For Grammy Consideration:
Directions for Submitting
In order to be considered for a Grammy Award, you will need to be registered with the Recording Academy as a media company. You can find a registration form at: http://mediaregistration.grammy.com/
After you have registered you will be able to send a submission into the Academy for consideration and will be directed by email as to how to go about this.
The Deadline for submission of albums for Grammy nomination consideration is August 5th, 2011. The music submitted must have been commercially released before July 31st, 2010, and all music received after this deadline will not be considered for possible Grammy nomination.
How Does the Screening/Consideration Process Work?
All music received for Grammy nomination consideration is subjected to a screening process to determine if the work is eligible and if it has been entered in the proper category. The list of music that passes this screening process is then sent out to members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences who then vote to nominate artists/albums in a general field plus no more than nine other more specialized fields.
Once the Academy has determined a list of nominations for the various awards, a final ballot is sent out to NARAS members who vote for the winners. The ballots are then counted by an independent account firm and the winners are announced.
NARAS members are supposed to vote based on quality of music and performance alone, and not give preference to someone based on their album's sales, their personal friendship, company loyalty or the like. It is supposed to be an award based solely on merit, and the Academy is very particular about upholding that integrity.
