Colin Vallon Trio

Colin Vallon/Patrice Moret/Samuel Rohrer

The Swiss trio's U.S. premiere tour and ECM debut CD release concert

“Vallon's piano work is capacious, intriguing and deceptively complex..."—All About Jazz

“Rruga," meaning 'path,' 'road' or 'journey' in Albanian, is the evocative title of the ECM debut by the trio of pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Samuel Rohrer. After shared musical experiences on the Swiss jazz scene, they began their trio journey five years ago, and have grown into one of Europe's most promising bands, shaping a rugged and individual music, inspired by songs and singers, and by the music of the Caucasus region as well as by the jazz tradition. Challenging conventions of the modern jazz piano trio, the instrumentalists meet on equal terms as the music is created, arranged and developed collectively.

The Festival of New Trumpet Music: Honoring Bill Dixon

With Dave Douglas and friends

Douglas is “an original thinker blessed with a seemingly bottomless well of intriguing ideas"—Howard Reich

The Festival of New Trumpet Music celebrates the life and work of the late trumpet player Bill Dixon, who was an inspiration and a trailblazer, not just for his extraordinary musical innovations as a trumpet player and composer, but also for his revolutionary work as an organizer and musical activist. The band is led by two-time Grammy-nominated jazz musician Dave Douglas, arguably the most prolific and original trumpeter-composer of his generation.

JUNE 17

Craig Taborn

CD release concert for his new ECM solo piano album, “Avenging Angel"

“There is no place for fear or doubt in pianist Craig Taborn's playing... His improvisational playing is a continual creation where the journey is the thing."—All About Jazz

“Avenging Angel" is Craig Taborn's distinguished contribution to the great solo piano tradition at ECM, a powerful, purposeful and rigorous album, which rises to the challenges of the format and transcends them. The disc explores the textural dimensions of sound, builds new structures, uncovers a rugged lyricism. Recorded in the optimal acoustics of the recital room at Lugano's Studio RSI, with Manfred Eicher producing, it's Taborn's first disc under his own name for ECM, following on from inspired sessions with Roscoe Mitchell, Evan Parker, David Torn and Michael Formanek.

AUGUST 19

Jonathan Batiste

“Batiste's style is complex yet never overwrought, even understated; it's a very mature sound from a young man making a big splash on today's jazz scene... However, Batiste is an electric live performer."—National Public Radio

Returning by popular demand for a fifth Harlem in the Himalayas concert, pianist JonathanBatiste has performed, recorded and toured over 30 countries with artist such as Harry Connick Jr., Abbey Lincoln, Jimmy Buffett, Lenny Kravitz, Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, The Batiste Brothers, and Cassandra Wilson & Roy Hargrove. In 2005, at just eighteen years old, he made his Carnegie Hall debut and is currently one of the hottest jazz artists performing today.

SEPTEMBER 16

David Binney Quartet & Special Guests

David Binney is “One of a handful of young players who have created an alternative jazz scene... all of whom are playing adventurous, original music."—Jazz Times

Back after sold out shows in years past, acclaimed and highly individual saxophonist/composer David Binney is one of the most prolific jazz musicians on the scene today. David's distinctive saxophone sound and innovative compositions have been heard from basement clubs in New York to jazz festivals in Europe. In addition to David's extensive work as a leader, he has been sought after as a sideman, appearing on record with Medeski, Martin & Wood and Uri Caine's Mahler Project. He has produced all of his own albums, in addition to two Lost Tribe releases. David started his record label, Mythology Records, in 1998.
