George Wein - originator and innovator of the Newport Folk and Newport Jazz Festivals - was hospitalized on Wednesday, August 4, for abdominal surgery to remove an obstruction caused by scar tissue from an old injury. The operation was successful and Mr. Wein is recuperating. The condition was not serious.

Even though this occurred on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of his world-famous Newport Jazz Festival, Mr. Wein is hoping to be able to make it to Newport for the Jazz Festival - which will honor him, as well as 50 years of great American music. George has been planning this celebration for over a year, and said today that he wants everyone to come to the Festival and “keep on swinging!"
