Gary Lucas plays “The Golem" @ Rubin Museum of Art NYC 2/10/06

From the Village Voice this week:

“Lucas's undefinable coup of a score to the '20s German expressionist film The Golem blended non-Klezmer Jewish roots with jazz and whatever else would evoke the film's eerie cosmology--he performs it next week at Rubin Museum of Art. His shape-shifting music is still among the more sophisticated expressions of a cultural consciousness."

Friday February 10th at 9:30pm at the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17th Street (corner of 7th Ave.):

Gary Lucas plays his original solo guitar score to accompany the German expressionist silent film classic “The Golem" (1920, d. Paul Wegener and Carl Boese)

Gary has performed with “The Golem" in 17 countries , most recently selling out the Bristol Watershed Media Centre in the UK, in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, at the Venice Biennale, London's Royal Festival Hall, the New York Jewish Film Festival at Lincoln Center, the Next Festival in Tel Aviv --and in Prague, home of The Golem.

The film concerns the 16th century Prague Rabbi Jehudah Loew, who legend has it created a man out of clay through Kabbalistic magic to protect the Jewish community from annihilation.

“Overwhelming music...Lucas is the semitic reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix". --Hamburg Morgenpost

“The famous instrumentalist played with an epic psychedelic sensibility". --Denni Telegraf (Prague)

“Hauntingly brilliant and meticulously timed." --Village Voice

Tickets are $15
