August 9th, Tonic, New York City
Victor Gama is an Angolan musician who creates intricate and beautiful instruments based upon traditional African structures. His last album was released on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records to international acclaim. Tonight he plays with free jazz bass master William Parker, and electronic artist Guillermo E Brown, a pivotal force in Thirsty Ear’s seminal Blue Series. Expect a variety of duet and trio performances bridging the gulfs between avant-jazz, hip hop, Afro-Cuban and Reich-esque minimalism.
This concert is part of a digital arts project entitled Folk Songs for the Five Points, creating an interactive map of the Lower East Side which will allow visitors to remix a wide variety of musical and field recordings (the sounds of passing trucks, market shouts, buskers, church songs etc), creating new folk songs" for the area.
