EMI Music has tapped Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishing to represent legendary jazz imprint Blue Note Records for synchronization of its master recordings on a global basis. EMI appointed Boosey & Hawkes for its expertise in jazz repertoire as Blue Note celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1939, Blue Note has become one of the definitive jazz labels boasting an extraordinary catalogue of classic recordings and works by many of the true giants of the genre including such legends as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon and Miles Davis as well as living legend Cassandra Wilson.

While Boosey & Hawkes is perhaps best known for being the largest specialist classical music publishing company in the world, the publisher has a strong track record in working with jazz. In addition to Boosey & Hawkes unrivalled catalogue of classical music copyrights, including the works of such distinguished composers as Stravinsky, Bartk, Copland, Britten, Prokofieff, Strauss and Rachmaninoff among many others, the company also has a formidable existing Jazz roster, including works by the likes of Charles Mingus, Wynton Marsalis, Andrew Hill, Paquito DRivera and Chick Corea.

We knew Blue Notes 70th anniversary this year represented a unique opportunity for synchronization of the labels legendary recordings, said Cynthia Sexton, Executive Vice President of Brand Partnerships, Licensing and Synch for EMI Music worldwide. Boosey & Hawkes has a great track record and unique specialization in the jazz genre for synch, and we are pleased to have them give the Blue Note repertoire a full-court press approach.

Natasha Baldwin, Head of Consultancy at Boosey & Hawkes said, This is an amazing coup for Boosey & Hawkes. Blue Note Records is a legendary label that has been instrumental in charting the course of jazz history and, alongside our existing classical roster, and the fact that we are continuing to strengthen our contemporary music offering, we are now able to provide an extremely diverse and compelling service to our many synch clients.

Adina Williams, Promotion Executive for Jazz & Standards is equally as enthusiastic, stating that representing the catalogue of Blue Note Records will allow the synch team to work with music written by some of the most iconic and legendary figures in the history of music.

Under this new agreement, Boosey & Hawkes can now offer master recording sourcing and clearance for many of their existing Jazz copyrights, which enables them to provide combined publishing and master synch solutions.

Bruce Lundvall, President, Blue Note Records, said, “I'm extremely pleased that Boosey & Hawkes will be working closely with Cynthia Sexton and me in representing the Blue Note catalogue for synchronization rights and clearance for many of our Jazz copyrights. Having their knowledgeable staff join our team as we begin our 70th anniversary year will be a true asset. I look forward to a positive creative relationship and a very productive future together."
