The Earshot Jazz Spring Series, 2004 -- “Springsville"

April has been designated Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) by the Smithsonian Institution and, as always, Earshot Jazz, Seattle's non-profit jazz organization, is more that willing to celebrate jazz as a living, thriving art form.

Earshot has put together a remarkable series of concerts for the month of April, taking the title “Springsville" from a Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration. The concerts feature legendary Jazz Masters and some of today's most important established and emerging artists in several venues around Seattle.

April 4 - Charles Lloyd with Eric Harland & Zakir Hussain
“Which Way is East" - Homage to Billy Higgins The legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd performs duo and trios with young jazz drummer Eric Harland and the renowned tabla master Zakir Hussain.

April 8 - Mimi Fox Trio
Nationally known jazz guitarist with her trio.

April 11 - William Parker Quartet
Noted New York improvising ensemble features Hamid Drake on drums, Rob Brown on sax, & Lewis Barnes on trumpet. Their “O'Neal's Porch" CD was NY Times top of 2001.

April 12 - Cuong Vu Trio & Friends
Former Bellevue resident, now a member of the Pat Metheny Group, returns with his own trio of Stomu Takieshi, bass and Ted Poor, drums.

April 17 - Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Count Basie's 100th
Seattle's all-star big band swings in a program honoring Count Basie's Centenary

April 18 - J. A. Granelli & Mr. Lucky
Former Seattle bassist returns in an Avant-Jazz/Blues Organ group with Brad Shepik & Andy Roth.

April 21 & 22 - Steve Coleman's Five Elements
The award-winning alto saxophonist appears for two nights with Jonathan Finlayson, trumpet, Jen Shyu, vocals, Craig Taborn, piano, Yunior T. Cabrera, bass, and Dafnis Prieto drums.

April 24 - Rashied Ali (drums), Ravi Coltrane (sax), & Reggie Workman (bass).
Three jazz masters appear in a quintet setting with young Seattle artists Andy Coe on guitar and Jumaane Smith on trumpet.

May 2 - Dave Douglas Quintet
Critic's favorite jazz trumpeter with a stellar group of Seamus Blake, tenor saxophone, Uri Caine, fender rhodes, James Genus, bass, Clarence Penn, drums.
