Like a language with many dialects, jazz speaks to its listeners in many forms. There are Dixieland and bebop, Latin and fusion. If you don't like one sound, chances are you'll like another.
“It's a creative language where the key to it is improvisation," said trumpet player Bob Levy, a professor emeritus of music at Lawrence University in Appleton and the leader of Big Band Reunion, one of the scheduled performers. “You get caught up in this wonderful feel of it, the groove. While (the event) is a wonderful coming together of musicians, people who already love it, it's also a wonderful opportunity to expand the audience."
The 16th annual festival takes place noon to dusk Saturday and Sunday in Menasha's Jefferson Park. The Jazz Corner Society holds the event with funds from individual donations, corporate contributions and grants. It is a gathering where jazz aficionados mingle with amateur musicians and listeners. Student jazz bands -- this year from Neenah High School, St. Mary Central High School and Seton Catholic Middle School -- play on a stage where regionally, nationally and internationally known artists also perform.
