sets at 9pm, 11pm, 12:30am
...The disc, with four originals and three standards, shows tremendous intuitive interplay and extended yet cohesive solos. Ken Franckling-Hot House
A hard-swinging virtuoso guitarist with a bluesy edge, West Orange-based Stryker hits all the right notes on his 18th date as a leader. The native Nebraskan, an alumnus of groups led by Jack McDuff and Stanley Turrentine and a long-time, if not yet major jazz name bandleader, brings his rich improvisational vocabulary to a variety of material. Those who like good jazz seasoned with blues should have his latest disc in their collection.
There are three innovative covers. The most striking of them is It Was a Very Good Year," which is rendered as a barn-burner in 6/8 time. A skilled crafter of gritty solos, Stryker is a strong composer as well. The title track bristles with energy of a metropolis. Biddy Fleet," which utilizes the changes of the war horse Cherokee," allows Stryker and Jersey City pianist Dave Kikoski to pull out all the stops with their solos. Drummer Victor Lewis and West Orange bassist Ed Howard keep the date crackling and swinging. Steve Garmhausen
