Katrina has had a dramatic effect on New Orleans performing musicians. We will do everything we can to aid those jazz musicians. Plans are being developed to fund raise and directly implement our commitment to contribute for New Orleans Musicians Disaster Relief. Saturday, Oct 8th: Plan on joining us as we celebrate the end of our year in East Harlem.
A New Orleans Second Line" Marching Band will traverse the neighborhood to attract a Second Line following to Creole. Band members Wycliffe Gordon-trombone, Howard Johnson-tuba, Art Lilliard-street drum plus guest marchers.
NOON: Beginning in on 118th Street from the corner of 118th Street to Second Avenue the Band will march North on 3rd Avenue to 125th Street, West on 125th Street to Lenox Avenue, South to 116th Street, East to 3rd Avenue and turn left to return to the front of Creole Restaurant for a Finale performance.
1:30pm - 3:00pm Courtney Bennett's Azai Trio Inside Creole will be more music, an all-you-eat contest (with a Creole secret recipe), a vocalist contest with a special grand prizes, free samples of Creole’s Anniversary dishes and specialty drinks will be provided by our liquor sponsors.
4:00 to 6:00 Closed Party by Invitation Only Lynette Washington, vocalist (winner of Jazzmobile's 2005 Anheuser Bush's NY Jazz Competition) with pianist Dennis Bell's Jazz New York. Artist Curt Matherne's marching jazz band paintings are all titled The New Orleans Second Line". Dozens of colorful paintings the artist explained, “After a funeral as we got to the church the Rebirth Jazz Band appeared out of a downpour playing," just as you see shown here in Second Line #4", Matherne's 24" x 36" acrylic that he calls en plein air, or on site painting" in and around his native New Orleans. I consider myself a Jazz Audio-Visualist because my paintings are my spontaneous response to the relationship between the audio and the visual as the scene unfolds".
