Guitarist Dave Stryker and saxophonist Steve Slagle are a rarity in the jazz world. They have stuck together and have been developing a group sound since the eighties. Dave and Steve have collaborated on 17 CD's and have taken their music all across the US, Europe and Japan, including a recent gig at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Now for the first time The Stryker / Slagle Band are recording a live CD, Mar. 2-3 at the Jazz Standard in NYC featuring their new rhythm section with Ed Howard on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. Guitarist Dave Stryker has 18 CD's out as a leader and has been a sideman on over 40 others. He got his start with Organist Jack McDuff, before becoming Stanley Turrentine's guitarist for over 13 years. He was recently voted a Rising Star Guitarist in the 2004 Downbeat Critics poll.
Saxophonist Steve Slagle has 10 CD's out as a leader and has been a sideman on many other's having performed with Machito, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Joe Lovano, the Mingus Big Band, and many more.

Stryker/Slagle Band Live At The Jazz Standard (Zoho Music) Zoho 200509 ***1/2
... A tour de force!
...Stryker-Slagle Band's stylistic diversity are displayed on Live At The Jazz Standard, recorded in early March of this year. It's the second Zoho CD by this group co-led with alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Slagle. The co-leaders, having played together for nearly two decades, have achieved an empathy that results in several passages of remarkable collective improvisation. With “I Loves You Porgy" the only standard, the original material is of paramount importance, Stryker contributing “The Great Divide," “Muddy Waters" and “The Chaser," while Slagle brought in the remaining five tunes. Slagle, who plays soprano sax only on “Baba Marta," offers a slashing, edgy tone and solid creativity all the way. Without a piano, Stryker has the added role of comping and handles it with the same aplomb found in his soloing. The best moments come on Slagle's “Passing Giant," “Doubleblue" and “Boogaloo 7," as well as the three Stryker tunes. --Will Smith
