CORNELIA STREET CAFÉ A FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS JULY AND AUGUST 2005
Cornelia Street Cafe has been a haven for artists of every conceivable genre (and quite a few inconceivable ones) for 28 years. In the course of a typical year we now present some 700 events, ranging from Russian poetry to Latin jazz, from science to songwriting, from theatre to cabaret. Suzanne Vega started out here when we were one room with a toaster oven, Eve Ensler began her Vagina Monologues in the downstairs cabaret, where Senator Eugene McCarthy has read his poetry, Dr. Oliver Sacks his prose, and members of Monty Python and the Royal Shakespeare Company intermittently appear. This summer, in a break from our regular programming, we are presenting a series of weekly festivals, celebrating some of the incredible diversity of this astonishing city.
Vessels Of Song Festival July 5-6 and July 8-10, 2005 The Songwriter's Beat 2005 FestivalJuly 19-24, 2005 Soul Of The Blues Summer Festival Tues. July 26 - Sun. July 31, 2005
A JULY GALLIMAUFRAY OF FILM, PERFORMANCE, JAZZ, THEATRE, AND MINI-MUSICALS
SUNDAY JULY 3 8:30pm FILM: NIGHT OF THE DAY OF THE DAWN OF THE SUN . . . A first public showing of the film by the notorious Jim Riffel--who last brought you the fifty-hour marathon, JOHN CONTE TRIES TO BREAK THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS RECORD FOR SOLO PIANO PLAYING OVER CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY, NOT TO MENTION BOXING DAY, AT THE CORNELIA STREET CAFE IN GREENWICH VILLAGE, NEW YORK CITY. And now for the complete title of the new film . . . NIGHT OF THE DAY OF THE DAWN OF THE SUN OF THE BRIDE OF THE RETURN OF THE REVENGE OF THE TERROR OF THE ATTACK OF THE EVIL MUTANT ALIEN FLESH EATING HELLBOUND CRAWLING ZOMBIFIED LIVING DEAD--PART III.
MONDAY JULY 4 8:30pm MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE: AMRAM AND CO--AMRAMICANA An American birthday event which explores in his highly personable, generous and informal style the astonishing variety of David Amram's interests and accomplishments—renowned composer of symphonic classical music, jazz compositions, improvisation, spoken word, scat, he sits at the piano, schmoozes about music, about the greats, the beats, the obscure, the legendary; plays the French horn, pulls out all kinds of instruments (flutes, drums, horns) gathered from his many circumnavigations of the globe, pulls in guests drawn from just about every artistic walk of life.
THURSDAY JULY 7 8:30pm & 10pm ALLABOUTJAZZ NEW YORK: JAZZ PERFORMANCE CD release celebration of the Katie Bull/Joe Fonda duo's Cup of Joe No Bull (Corn Hill Indie Records). Katie Bull is ...a prodigiously talented singer...who sings in a warm, smooth voice that will remind some of Sarah Vaughan and others, interestingly, of the young Chet Baker—at least until she starts to scat, at which point her rhythmic adventurousness and unusual syllabic choices make it clear that she is approaching this repertoire with an agenda all her own.” AllMusicGuide. Joe Fonda is a composer, bassist, recording artist, interdisciplinary performer, and producer. There is more to creative mastership than the surface of satisfaction and political certainty. The music of Joe Fonda is part of a living tradition of belief and dedication. Future historians will be surprised at the breadth of Mr. Fonda's offerings. This is a real virtuoso and composer of the highest order." Anthony Braxton
MONDAY JULY 11 6pm PLAY: MARRIAGE MARRIAGE MARRIAGE A dramatic reading of Marriage Marriage Marriage by Geoffrey Chaucer and Leonard Wolf, a 21st century play in which Chaucer's bawdy stories The Miller's Tale" and the Merchant's Tale" are fused with The Wife of Bath's Prologue." The play, in modern English, is like Chaucer's tales themselves, lyric, hilarious, obscene, and insightful about the tragi-comedy of marriage between unequal partners. Directed by Christopher Cartmill, with Suzanne Toren as the Wife of Bath.
MONDAY JULY 11 8:30pm MINI-MUSICAL: SERENITY HAWKFIRE NEEDS TO SHARE A Highly Evolved, Interactive Musical Written and Performed by Suzanne Falter-Barns & Ryan Brown Not only is Serenity Hawkfire an internationally recognized psychic songologist, she’s also an animal life coach, a Tantric sex consultant, an aura organizer, a licensed colon cleaner and fecologist, a gifted dental channeler, a tea leaf interpreter and a certified tax intuitive! Not surprisingly, she is also the author of a breakthrough self help book, Beyond Being, which happens to be entirely blank. Serenity Hawkfire is a narcissistic media ‘expert’ with an ego the size of Chicago … and she’s on her ‘Humble Guru Tour’ across America, determined to save souls, with her beleagured assistant, Wild Heart, who calls himself the ‘Urban Druid’ as he communicates freely with trees and ‘spirit of the wood.’ An evening of interactive theater that freely mixes scripted material, song and improvisation.
TUESDAY JULY 12 6pm MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: A TROUBADOUR'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY: Singer, poet, chansonniere Beth Anne Cole accompanied by virtuoso guitarist David Acker. Quirks and quarks including original songs, musical tales, songs in French, Portuguese, Yiddish, Ladino—and English!
MONDAY JULY 18 8:30pm MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: ROGUES GALLERY Songs by David Reiffel, sung by Melissa Dye, David Frutkoff, Richard Roland, Peri Smilow, and Anne Tofflemire, with Rachel Peters and David Reiffel, piano; directed by Nell Balaban. Filled with people behaving badly, ROGUES' GALLERY is a collection of the theater and cabaret songs of composer-lyricist David Reiffel. For five years the composer-in-residence for the nationally-acclaimed Cornerstone Theater Company, Reiffel's songs have been performed across the country, from Eastport, Maine to Schurz, Nevada and from Marmarth, North Dakota to Port Gibson, Mississippi. (Not to mention Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.) ROGUES' GALLERY: bounders and fools, fanatics and blasphemers, Jean-Paul Sartre and the notorious Lili Gandolfi.
