Coltrane Dialogues is a program that alternates between performance of John Cotrane's music and a conversation with the audience. By involving the audience in the conversation, the program cuts across the distance that often exists between artist and audience. It also gives us an opportunity to explore together the meaning and impact of the music. The conversation is led both by alto saxophonist and leader Carl Grubbs, whose cousin, Naima, was John Coltrane's first wife and whose experience being mentored by Coltrane enables him to speak of him from direct and powerful personal knowledge; and by tenor saxophonist Salim Washington, whose scholarly work includes a doctoral dissertation for Harvard University on “Coltrane, Jazz, and American Culture."
