INDIO, California This years Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began Friday like most before it insane lines, scorching sun and 75,000 attendees in ever-dwindling clothing.
For the next three days, Coachella provided the kind of musical spectacles this California festival is known for, with mind-blowing sets from Jay-Z, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, Thom Yorke and many more.
Friday at Coachella 2010
Thanks to insane lines for both parking and entrance to the venue, the festival didn't start getting packed Friday until almost sundown, when sets by ska/punk luminaries The Specials and Bostons Passion Pit were getting going.
Youve got Jay-Z, you've got LCD Soundsystem and you've got Vampire Weekend were just here to kick it off, Passion Pits Michael Angelakos announced from the Outdoor Theater to the sold-out crowd. I don't think we've ever played for this many people.
While Passion Pit got the crowds dancing, sets by Grizzly Bear and supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (composed of Queens of the Stone Ages Josh Homme, Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelins John Paul Jones) got the audience rocking as the day turned to night.
After dark, Coachella transforms into something of an outdoor rave complete with glow sticks, pyrotechnics and beds adorned with the logo of supperclub (seriously).
Luckily there was music to match. Fridays dance party officially began as LCD Soundsystem took to the main stage and played a crowd-pleasing set packed with club favorites like Losing My Edge and Drunk Girls (which leaked recently, weeks ahead of the May release date for the bands new This Is Happening).
We have a short set so we have to cram some shit in really fast, LCD mastermind James Murphy said from the stage, performing with a full band under a giant disco ball. During the set, Murphy commented that LCD had often played Coachella before but Fridays performance was the first time they'd been invited to play the main stage.
Lets be honest, were the mixed nuts, Murphy said. [Tonight] were not the steak that's Jay-Z but were happy to be the vegan option.
The Soundsystem closed with New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down a humorous segue for the boy from Brooklyn Jay-Z, whose Empire State of Mind is currently making everyone wish they were from the Big Apple (or falsely claim that they are).
