ORMOND BEACH -- When the Rev. Dabney Smith was growing up, the weekly folk mass at St. James Episcopal Church was a chance to play acoustic guitar and some “unannounced rock."

When the New Orleans priest returns to his childhood church on Sunday, the hymnal music will take a swing toward Dixieland.

P.T. Saverstrom's Gatortail Jass Band will take on the role of church choir and organist, jazzing up the traditional songs like “Amazing Grace" as well as playing the inevitable, “When the Saints Come Marching In."

“It swings," said Saverstrom, the pianist for the seven-piece band. “People will be tapping their feet."

The Rev. Stephen Morris, the church pastor, will begin mass with a church announcement: “Laissez les bon temps rouler!," the French translation for “Let the good times roll."

The Jazz Mass is as “much Mardi Gras as it is church," Morris said. “We have a lot of fun."
