After touring with Steely Dan - Dave Holland - Dave Douglas - and others, saxophonist Chris Potter turns it out live for his debut on Sunnyside Records, coming into Philadelphia to announce his new CD, Lift: Live At The Village Vanguard.
An album that has Live at the VV in the title automatically refers to a legacy of jazz giants - John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans to name a few - who made definitive musical statements in the pie-shaped basement room.
Chris Potter is one of the most in-demand saxophonists of today and listened to many Live at VV records as he made his way in his career. A musical prodigy who grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, Potter moved to New York City at age 18 to attend Manhattan School Of Music. He first played the Vanguard at age 20 as part of Red Rodney's band.
A players' player, Potter recorded his first album as a leader in 1992 and has released a dozen albums since then. He's known for his imaginative, free-flowing playing and unpredictable turns on the horn with his live, electrically-charged band.
Recorded during a weeklong stint in December 2002, Lift: Live at VV features Potter, keyboardist Kevin Hays, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Bill Stewart.
