Nicole Mitchell, “one of Chicago's more inspiring jazz visionaries," (Chicago Tribune), an award winning jazz flutist, modernist composer and great contributor to Chicago music, has recently relocated to Los Angeles.

On January 28th, at 8pm, Mitchell will debut her talents in duet with legendary opera composer and improvising pianist Anthony Davis at Winifred Smith Hall on the campus of University of California Irvine. Mitchell, a recent recipient of the Alpert Award in Music, begins a week-long residency at California Institute of the Arts on January 24th, and will share her talents with flute, composition and improvisation students to culminate in a final performance January 27th at the Wild Beast Pavilion (Cal Arts).

As a composer, Mitchell recently premiered two new works for orchestra in Chicago in the past few months, including, Harambee, which was a popular success with the Chicago Sinfonietta and Apostolic Church of God at Symphony Center. She was awarded “Top Flutist" by the Jazz Journalist Association and Downbeat Magazine in 2010 and 2011. Her primary group, Black Earth Ensemble, has received critical acclaim in the U.S. and Europe.

Nicole Mitchell, the former first-woman president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), looks forward to sharing her talents and vision with the Los Angeles music scene. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at University of California Irvine.

Anthony Davis is an internationally renowned jazz pianist, and operatic, choral, symphonic and chamber works composer. He is also known for his virtuoso performances both as a solo pianist and as the leader of the ensemble Episteme, a unique ensemble of musicians who are disciplined interpreters as well as provocative improvisers.

Nicole Mitchell and Anthony Davis have collaborated together since their debut concert at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2010, where Jazz Times noted that their performance ..."created an atmosphere of both intimacy and tension-charged exploration." Their concert January 28th will be a diverse program of original works and improvisational explorations between the artists.
