Notes on Chamberworks

Voices of the Earth (Michel Gentile)

Voices of the Earth draws from the natural world to create a special balance between mind and body. The improvising musician is ideally situated to achieve such a balance. This piece uses the Fibonacci series in particular as a guiding principle when determining phrase lengths, tempos, intervals, etc. Tone clusters reveal a melody through subtraction (Chthonian), the overtone series creates an unpredictable chorale (Sous-entendu), four different tempos play simultaneously (Quatre Temps, un Mouvement), and phrases grow in Fibonacci strands (Corymb).

Inner Landscapes/Outer Strategies (Daniel Kelly)

Inner Landscapes/Outer Strategies is the first in a series of autobiographical pieces composed for different ensembles. In this piece, composer/pianist Daniel Kelly has reflected back to key emotional points in his life and scored them to music. In performance, these musical memories will be, at various times, amplified, questioned, re-contextualized, and even placed under attack, by different strategies employed by the improvising musicians in the ensemble. The work draws inspiration from the melodic language of Prokofiev and Peter Gabriel, the gestural and multi-layered language of Penderecki and Scelsi and the conductions of Butch Morris.

Life Lives (Rob Garcia)

This suite reflects upon the human experience of seeing and being with the ugliness and beauty of finding one's own truth through sudden difficult, challenging and amazing experiences life has given. The inspiration of the second movement, “Being Becoming Beauty" permeates the entire suite. The movements are connected by improvisations that express the emotional responses to sudden twists and turns of life's journey.
