Challenging jazz music tempts Jane Monheit
Some day, someone might write the perfect jazz-bluegrass Christmas song. Then Jane Monheit's favorites will merge.
Until then, she can mainly stick to the jazz classics. She seems to do them splendidly.
At 20, she was runner-up in the Thelonius Monk Institute vocal competition. Two years later, MacKenzie Wilson wrote in allmusic.com, “Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the highest touted female talents in jazz."
Monheit turns 28 today and reaches the Wharton Center on Friday, for her sold-out Pasant Theatre show. Between the jazz classics, she may slip in a couple songs from her new Christmas album.
“I would love to do the Christmas songs already," Monheit said by phone. “Maybe I could do a couple that are just winter songs."
