Grammy-Award winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson will perform her first concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center's (JALC) Rose Theater, located in Frederick P. Rose Hall (FPRH) on October 22 at 8pm. For tickets, visit JALC's Frederick P. Rose Hall box office (open Monday-Saturday 10am-8:30pm and Sunday 11am-8:30pm) on Broadway at 60th Street, call CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, or visit www.jalc.org. This concert is sponsored by Altria Group.

Glamorous songstress, Ms. Wilson, Time Magazine's 2001 Best Singer, graces JALC's Rose Theater with her elegant presence and eclectic style in their new home. From new works, to jazz classics, to Bob Dylan compositions, Ms. Wilson covers it all. She cannot be pigeonholed into a particular style.

Ms. Wilson's mixed bag of tricks comes from her Jackson, Mississippi upbringing. “Down South, musicians have to be able to play in many different circumstances, and in many contexts," she explains. “They have to play jazz, they have to integrate blues, rhythm and blues, and they have to know a little country. And the lines are blurred sometimes, because that's what everybody wants to hear."

With chart-topping albums and a 1995 Grammy under her belt for Best Jazz Vocalist , Ms. Wilson continues to wow audiences near and far. As Jon Pareles of The New York Times puts it, “She made every whim sound like a glimpse of wisdom." While the Baltimore Sun raves, “A piece of sun glitters in her throat. When Cassandra opens her mouth to sing, the words flow, drenched in honey, warmth and light."

Ms. Wilson performed at a December 1997 JALC world premiere commissioned concert entitled “Traveling Miles: Music from Miles Davis." Ms. Wilson also appears on Mr. Marsalis' commissioned Blood On The Fields , which won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize In Music.

Cassandra Wilson hails from Jackson, Mississippi and today is considered as an unequaled vocalist of her generation. Her latest album is Glamoured, featuring a trademark mix of first-rate originals from diverse artists including Muddy Waters, Sting, Abbey Lincoln and Willie Nelson. Her 14th album as a leader, Ms. Wilson assembled longtime cohorts guitarist Brandon Ross and percussionist Jeffrey Haynes, as well as harmonica player Gregoire Maret, bassists Reginald Veal and Calvin Jones, and drummer Herlin Riley. She began recording widely in the 1980s, at first, with Steve Coleman and Henry Threadgill's New Air. By the mid-90s, she had recorded with many New York musicians including Mulgrew Miller and Greg Osby. Blues pioneer Robert Johnson was an influence and her style occasionally recalled the late, great Nina Simone.

Ms. Wilson began her musical career performing in and around Jackson, Mississippi. For her latest release, Glamoured, she assembled a top-notch band for the Mississippi sessions. Then in New York City, Ms. Wilson found another musical catalyst in producer Fabrizio Sotti, who helped finish the album. As Mr. Sotti put it, “I've worked with a lot of singers in the past, but with Cassandra, I felt she brought much more. She's got the whole package
