Canada Beats U.S. in Digital Music Growth

According to the latest Nielson Soundscan figures digital music sales grew in Canada by 19%, while the U.S. market remained stagnant, with just 1% growth. This marks the fifth straight year in which the Canadian digital market has grown faster than the U.S., says law professor Michael Geist. “The recording industry will no doubt point to decelerating growth and the fact that the Canadian digital market comprises a smaller share of the market than in the U.S.," he says.

“Yet the reality is that Canadian market's global ranking is the same for both digital and non-digital sales—according to the Recording Industry in Numbers 2010, Canada ranks 7th worldwide on both counts." Contrary to popular belief, Geist believes these stats prove that Canada isn't the music piracy haven it's made out to be; it's digital music market is growing faster than the U.S. Chart:
