For six nights in the historic Distillery District at the Tank House Theatre, the curtain will rise for a truly unique and intimate series, complete with traditional seating in cabaret style, as part of the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival, running from June 23 - July 2, 2006.
Featuring vocalists from the worlds of jazz, theatre and film, performances by Adi Braun, George Evans, Andy Bey, Sandra Caldwell, Michel Brube and Lori Cullen will kick off the inaugural Cabaret Series.
A sophisticated style with subtle delivery, Adi Braun's repertoire ranges from standards of the great American songbook to European cabaret in a multitude of languages whether it is in English, French, Spanish or German. Fresh off the heels of his new release, Bewitched, George Evans is a jazz musician whose work in deeply rooted in the New York cabaret tradition. Over the years his sound has been likened to singers such as Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan. Andy Bey, one of the great unsung heroes in jazz, was a child prodigy who performed at The Apollo at the age of twelve and recorded his first solo album at thirteen. With a four octave vocal range, this 2005 Grammy nominee has performed with many jazz stars such as Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, Lonnie Liston Smith and Duke Pearson. No stranger to the stage, Sandra Caldwell has acting credits in film, TV and Broadway. She last appeared to rave reviews in Annie Get Your Gun and recently performed for newly appointed Governor General Michelle Jean. Michel Brub, who first got his start in cabaret and dinner theatres across Quebec, has gone on to record with Chrissy Hynde, Jennifer Warnes, Guido Basso, Ashley MacIssac, Doug Riley and Kim Richardson. Performing with Michel will be the Ron Davis Trio. A singer-songwriter for over 10 years, Lori Cullen both intuitively interprets lyrics from the standards and also composes her own material. Calling for Rain is her latest release and has been generating great reviews.
