Brisbane Jazz lovers are in for a real treat as Brisbane Festival joins forces with Jazz Queensland to present an exciting series of Jazz concerts in the beautiful and historic Courier-Mail Spiegeltent every Sunday afternoon during the Brisbane Festival 2008 Season 20 July - 3rd August from 2pm-5pm. The Jazz On Sunday program will showcase 55 of Brisbane's best jazz improvisers and performers, including some nationally and internationally renowned artists, who will all be performing across an highly entertaining array of jazz styles. On Sunday 20 July, Lisa and Jose McLaughlin's electric jazz quintet will perform your favourite standards and impress you with some contemporary and original compositions.
Then Hot Mambo will burn with passion and get you moving with the hot pounding rhythms of Cuban salsa to the cool strains of Brazilian samba.
International jazz diva Catherine Lambert will then capture the Courier-Mail Spiegeltent audience with her dynamic energy, crooning sultry jazz ballads. The second part of the Jazz on Sunday series on 27 July, will feature the warm tones of the trumpet and hammond organ, with Shannon Marshall's funky hammond combo playing a fresh mix of jazz, latin and 60's soul.
Then get set for Rohan Somasekaran's hard-swinging modern jazz quartet, playing soulful jazz music inspired by the legendary Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Milt Jackson.
East Coast Ensemble are one of the most exciting new bands on the Brisbane jazz scene, and will feature an impressive line-up of key artists, bringing cool arrangements, innovative presentation and the swing back to contemporary jazz. On 3rd August, get ready for a Sunday afternoon of swing, cool jazz and hot fun as amazing vocalist Renae Suttie, winner of the ABC 612 - Valley Jazz Festival Vocalist Award, will take you on a musical journey down memory lane with The Swing Collective band.
John Hoffman, is promising an exceptional performance with Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium's premier 18 piece Jazz Orchestra, The Con Artists. This special concert will feature the Generations in Jazz James Morrison Vocalist Award winners: Kate Wighton, Alessandro Bellino, Ellie Hoyt, and Hannah Macklin.
