MANILA, PHILIPPINES: Kool Kat Productions Manila was only on their 3rd night since they started to hold jazz nights at Scarlet Wine Lounge at The Fort, headlined by none other than the jazz icon, Boy Katindig. What was supposed to be an ordinary night turned out to reveal a lot pleasant surprises as the music unfolded throughout the evening.

It was good enough that both VIP rooms were booked, one: by a group of jazz aficionados celebrating a birthday; and the other: by a well-respected Senator and his friends. It was even better when some of Boy Katindig's fans and loyal supporters were already in their seats eager for the show to start.

In the middle of the first set, the first big surprise came when Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia walked in the room and with him is cousin, Tuts Corral, Vice Mayor Thaddy Sayson and their entourage, arriving straight from the airport. Earlier this year, Mayor Leonardia gave Boy K a warm welcome when he was in Bacolod for the 2nd Bacolod Jazz Festival organized by The Jazz Society of Negros.

Boy Katindig's repertoire is composed of contemporary jazz music fused with straight- ahead numbers, modern interpretations of 80s jazz fusion hits, selections from his latest album, “Groovin' High" and new takes on his classic original hits. As the audience marinate themselves with some hot and cool jazz, the taste buds are exhilarated with the experience from a delectable selection of baked oysters and ultra-thin crust pizzas, pairing them with your choice of beer, always served in thirst-quenching below-zero temperature.

By the second set, another batch of surprise came when singer, Stella Ignacio, arrives with an entourage of smooth jazz fanatics and colleagues. A few minutes later, Boy K's long-time friends, Jun and Sandra Viray of the Philippine International Jazz Festival Foundation arrives. This is when we knew that the night was far from over—it just got better now, with a bunch of vocalists and pianists around.

All the professional musicians took turns in sitting in as everybody enjoyed the music and camaraderie. From political figures to local and visiting jazz aficionados and colleagues in the industry—there really could be something about Boy Katindig and his music that get all these elements together on an “ordinary" night.

Well, since it's a Boy Katindig night, I don't think it can still be called “ordinary." The excellence in his playing, the musical taste reflected in his repertoire and interpretation, the steady support of his musicians and, of course, not leaving behind the classy laid-back experience at Scarlet Wine Lounge—Wednesday evenings have now become far from ordinary.

The days of high-quality entertainment has come back! Contemporary jazz, fine wine, great food, the right ambience and great company can now be experienced every Wednesday at Scarlet Wine Lounge.
