Boosey & Hawkes Now Represents the Works of Charles Mingus
Boosey & Hawkes is pleased to add the music of Charles Mingus to its growing catalogue of distinguished jazz and classical works. Through an agreement with Jazz Workshop, Inc., Boosey & Hawkes is currently the agent for synchronization and choreographic uses of Mingus' compositions, and anticipates making certain works available for rental in the near future. Boosey & Hawkes represents the rights to Mingus' works throughout the world with the exception of Japan and certain territories in Europe. Jazz Workshop, Inc. will continue to handle all other rights to the Mingus catalogue directly.
One of the most important figures in twentieth century American music, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, and renowned bandleader and composer. At a memorial following Mingus' death, Steve Schlesinger of the Guggenheim Foundation remarked: “I look forward to the day when we can transcend labels like jazz and acknowledge Charles Mingus as the major American composer that he is." The New Yorker wrote: “For sheer melodic and rhythmic and structural originality, his compositions may equal anything written in western music in the twentieth century."
In the liner notes to his 1971 release Let My Children Hear Music, Mingus refers to being influenced by classical composers such as Ravel and B & H's own Stravinsky, adding, “In my young days, we were raised more on classical music than on any other kind."
Says Boosey & Hawkes General Manager Marc Ostrow: “We are pleased to represent the work of this significant twentieth century composer. It is only fitting that the music of Charles Mingus should live alongside the masterworks of Bartok, Bernstein, Copland, Stravinsky, and Andrew Hill." Boosey & Hawkes launched its jazz initiative in 2006 and now represents pianist/composers Chick Corea, David Benoit, and Andrew Hill, also serving as worldwide agents for the historic Second Floor Music catalogue, which features some of the best-known compositions of the bop and post-bop eras.
