Bill Charlap at The Village Vanguard, November 11-16

Bill Charlap Trio - November 11-16: Over the years, pianist Bill Charlap has won accolades for his melodicism and harmonic sophistication. Charlap currently leads his trio with Peter Washington on bass and 'the jazz maniac' Kenny Washington on drums. Charlap has performed with Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, Jim Hall, Milt Hinton, Phil Woods and many others. Charlap was also musical director of “Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil, A Celebration of Johnny Mercer" as part of the 1995 JVC Jazz Festival in New York. With his newest album, Stardust (Blue Note), Charlap puts a fresh perspective on to well known compositions from songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, and is joined by Tony Bennett, Shirley Horn, Jim Hall, tenor saxophonist Frank Wess, and others. Other recordings available from the Bill Charlap Trio include Written In the Stars on Blue Note Records and S'Wonderful on the Japanese label, Venus. Kenny Barron Sextet - November 18-23: Kenny Barron's unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing inspired The Los Angles Times to name him “one of the top jazz pianists in the world" and Jazz Weekly to call him “The most lyrical piano player of our time." In 1959 Kenny had worked with drummer Philly Joe Jones while still in high school, and at age 19, moved to New York and freelanced with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody. Barron went on to play with a who's who list of jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Heath, Woody Shaw, Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis, Sonny Stitt, Harry “Sweets" Edison, Jimmy Owens, Stan Getz, Charlie Haden and his Monk tribute ensemble, Sphere. In 1974 Kenny recorded his first album as a leader for the Muse label, entitled “Sunset To Dawn." This was to be the first in over 40 recordings as a leader, including “Spirit Song" (2000), “Freefall" (with Regina Carter, 2001) and a new reissue of The Kenny Barron Trio “Live At Bradley's" (recorded during the heyday of the Greenwich Village club with Ray Drummond and Ben Riley). At the Village Vanguard, November 18-23, the Kenny Barron Sextet will feature Terrell Stafford on trumpet, Ravi Coltrane & Vincent Herring on saxophones and the great Ben Riley on drums.
