For decades, New York City has stood as the symbolic epicenter of the jazz world. But a new conversation is gaining momentum—one that points artists toward a different, and perhaps more strategic, entry point into the American jazz landscape: Texas.
At this year’s JAZZAHEAD 2026, the virtual session “Beyond NYC: Using Texas to Build Your U.S. Jazz Career”, presented by JazzMetroplex, invites international artists and industry professionals to reconsider how—and where—they establish themselves in the United States.
Texas, long mythologized for its size and independence, carries a jazz legacy that runs just as deep. It is the birthplace of innovators like Ornette Coleman and Dewey Redman, and the home state of modern torchbearers such as Norah Jones and Roy Hargrove. But beyond its artistic lineage, Texas offers something increasingly rare in today’s music economy: scale, accessibility, and opportunity.
With five of the 20 largest cities in the United States, Texas provides a dense yet navigable touring circuit, supported by venues, festivals, and academic institutions that rival those of more traditionally recognized markets. Historic spaces like the Caravan Of Dreams and leading programs such as the University of North Texas College of Music have helped shape generations of musicians while anchoring a vibrant regional ecosystem.
This 30-minute session will explore how artists can leverage Texas not merely as an alternative to New York, but as a launchpad—a place to build networks, test markets, and develop sustainable touring and career strategies.
The session is open to the general public via Google Meet (link); If you are attending JAZZAHEAD! You can access the session through the Discussion area (5) minutes before start time. Questions will only be taken from JazzAhead! 2026 Attendees. (Presented By JazzMetroplex)
