STORY WEAVERS, PRIZE WINNERS AND CRAFTSMEN TAKE TO THE STAGE AT THE MONTREAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
Joseph Rouleau, James Ehnes, Ben Charest and Montreal instrument-makers featured during third week of Festival's 10th anniversary season Montreal, June 7, 2005 ─The Montreal Chamber Music Festival continues its 10th season with a third week of multidisciplinary programming that promises to be a pleasure for all the senses. Storytelling through music is celebrated by an impressive line-up of artists in the Music & Words programming of June 9th. Award-winning composer Ben Charest brings his genius to the Chalet atop Mount Royal. Acclaimed Canadian violinist James Ehnes and Montreal instrument-makers promise to impress concert-goers with the magic of stringed instruments. The Montreal Chamber Music Festival, with performances at the Chalet atop Mount Royal until June 18th, is under the direction of its founder, Denis Brott and the Jazz Series artistic direction of Oliver Jones. June 9: Music & Words An all-star line-up of performers fill the hall with music and narration. La Revue de Cuisine by Martinu, which describes the goings on in the kitchen between chef, utensils, pots, pans and more, is very jazzy and includes a Charleston, a Tango and a March. Stravinsky’s theatrical masterpiece, L’Histoire du Soldat, will be performed and narrated in a unique presentation. Featured artists include Joseph Rouleau, Gabriel Gascon and Rosemarie Landry (narrators), Andy Simionescu (violin), Katerina Juraskova (cello), Yung-chiao Wei (bass), James Campbell (clarinet), James McKay (bassoon), Paul Merkelo (trumpet), Rachel Thomas (trombone), Robin Engelman (percussion) and Louise-Andrée Baril (piano). The evening’s program includes Martinu's The Kitchen Revue, Jazz Suite and Ballet in one act, Baker's Hommage à l'Histoire, Stravinski's L'Histoire du Soldat.
June 10: The Music of Ben Charest Félix, César and ADISQ-winning, Oscar, Grammy and Juno-nominated jazz artist and composer Ben Charest is sure to be a smash hit at the Festival this year. Having the composer of the music for The Triplets of Belleville join us to celebrate the Festival’s 10th anniversary celebration is a thrill … it doesn’t get much better than this. Featured artists joining Ben Charest include Chet Doxas (saxophone and clarinet), Jim Doxas (drums), Bill Mahar (trumpet), Jean Derome (flute), Brent Besner (clarinet), Dave Martin (trombone) and Sheila Hannigan (cello).
June 11: James Ehnes: Violin Virtuoso This evening features Canadian born James Ehnes, one of his generation's most talented young violinists, and recent winner of a career grant from the Avery Fisher artist program. Ehnes enjoys a flourishing career on the major stages of the world. Despite his meteoric rise to fame as a soloist on the world's best stages, he continues to nurture his love of chamber music. Music: Neilsen, Ravel, Beethoven. Invited artists include James Campbell (clarinet), Stephane Lévesque (bassoon), James Somerville (horn), Katerina Juraskova (cello), Yung-chiao Wei (bass), James Ehnes (violin), Denis Brott (cello) and Neal Gripp (viola). Pre-concert event: A unique pre-concert lecture-demonstration will include a special display and discussion on details pertaining to the physics, design and construction of a master violin. Instrument-makers, led by Tom Wilder, will be onsite showing the various stages of design and discussing the mysteries that go into creating the voice in a string instrument. All performances begin at 8 p.m. Pre-concert events begin at 7 p.m. All concerts take place at the Chalet atop Mount Royal located less than 15 minutes from downtown Montreal by automobile or public transportation. A free shuttle service departing from the parking lot at Smith House is available to bring concert-goers to the Chalet.
