The Eaton Canyon fire disaster has left many Altadena families in dire need of assistance. In response, BackRhoades Productions has organized a benefit concert to help provide much-needed support to these affected families. The Pasadena Community Foundation has been chosen to manage the funds.
Some of Southern California’s premiere musicians are graciously donating their time and talents to help make this event successful for our neighbors in their time of need.
In need of a larger venue for concerts, I called the theater at 7 AM, expecting to leave a message. To my surprise, Judy Kim, the owner, answered. She was onboard with my idea of pairing jazz concerts with movies, and we immediately set a facility tour date. During the tour, I thought “have I bitten off more than I can chew? This place is huge. But all the amenities were a perfect match. So, I decided to roll with it.
On January 7, 2025, a single spark + 100 mph winds ignited wildfires throughout L.A. County, devastating Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Eaton Canyon, and Altadena. As a former Pasadena resident who grew up just a few blocks south of Altadena's fire zone, I felt a strong connection to the community and saw my affiliation with the theater as more than a coincidence. Remember, it was less than a week prior that I learned of the Gardena Cinema Theater and met Judy Kim.
I prayed for my neighbors and all L.A. fire victims, but prayers alone may not be sufficient. I had to read between the lines to see God’s message and plan for me. I then realized, it was my appointed duty to organize “The Altadena Aftermath Benefit Concert.”
