This August is Charlie O's eighth anniversary of presenting the best in live straight ahead jazz in the Los Angeles area and we want to thank all of you - musicians and fans alike - who make this all possible! Our thanks go to our wonderful staff as well. We'll be celebrating all month long with great guest artists, outstanding big bands, hot Latin jazz, a CD Release Party and two birthday parties.
Our Monday big bands include Med Flory Supersax Jazz Wave Big Band and we'll also be celebrating Med's 82nd birthday on the 4th; Mike Barone's Big Band returns on the 11th; the Ron King Big Band is here on the 18th (Ron's band having recently toured in Jakarta, Indonesia, to play the Java Jazz Festival, and having been featured at the Hollywood Bowl with the Manhattan Transfer, is on a roll! It has become popular among jazz fans everywhere they go! Don't miss Grammy-nominated soloist Ron King leading a tightly-woven ensemble of 16 of the best players in LA, through some of the finest charts you will ever hear!); and last but not least - the long awaited return of the Frank Capp Juggernaut Big Band on the 25th when we'll be celebrating Frank's birthday! Please come out to support the efforts of these great jazz musicians doing what they do best! There is a $20 cash cover charge every Monday which is good for the entire evening. Please make reservations early as they are required for big band nights, especially the 8 PM show.
Our Friday and Saturday line ups feature exceptional guests and they perform with Chris Conner, John Giannelli, Jeff Littleton, or Trevor Ware, bass; Roy McCurdy, drums; John Beasley, Jon Mayer, Lanny Hartley or Mike Melvoin, piano. Our super lineup of guests include great vocalist cle Thompson on the 1st; Pete Christlieb on the 2nd; Zane Musa on the 8th; Benn Clatworthy on the 9th; Azar Lawrence on the 15th, Plas Johnson on the 16th, Justo Almario on the 22nd; Rickey Woodard on the 23rd; the amazing and one and only Bill Henderson on the 29th; and Lanny Morgan on the 30th. Reservations highly recommended for all Friday and Saturday performances.
Please join us for one of our terrific Sunday performances - the Tateng Katindig Trio (David Anderson and Richard Simon) on the 3rd; the CJS Quintet featuring Chuck Johnson, James Smith, Koji Ono, Curtis Robertson, Jr. and Keita Akutsu on the 10th; the Doug Webb Quartet (Tony Dumas, Mehesh Balasooria, Gerry Gibbs) on the 17th; Ron Anthony &Barry Zweig with John Belzaguy and Steve Schaeffer on the 24th; and the Benn Clatworthy Quartet on the 31st. Reservations are suggested. Our Tuesday performances include the Ottmaro Ruiz Quartet (Ben Wendel, Edwin Livingston, Jimmy Branly) on the 5th; the Jack Sheldon California Cool Quartet on the 12th; the Jennifer Leitham Trio (Randy Drake, Josh Nelson) celebrating the release of their newest CD - Left Coast Story -- on the 19th; and the Carl Saunders Sextet on the 26th (Carl is busy lining up the usual suspects for this gig). Reservations suggested for these Tuesday performances, especially Jack Sheldon's performances.
Our Wednesday guests include our lovely songbird Denise Donatelli with Christian Jacob, Hamilton Price and Joe LaBarbera on the 6th; the Emil Richards Joe Porcaro Quartet (Emil, Joe, Bruce Lett, Mike Lang) on the 13th; the Zane Musa Quartet on the 20th; and the Jack Sheldon California Cool Quartet on the 27th. Reservations suggested for these performances - especially for Jack Sheldon!
Our Thursday performances include Chuck Berghofer's Midnight Jazz Band (Chuck, Gary Foster, Tom Ranier, Joe LaBarbera) on the 7th; the wonderful Pete Christlieb Tall &Small Big Band on the 14th ($10 cover charge applies for the 14th which is good for the entire evening); the hot Latin jazz sounds of the Francisco Aguabella 7 Piece Jazz Ensemble on the 21st; and the Don Menza Quartet (Don, Tom Ranier, Steve Schaeffer, Chris Conner) on the 28th. Reservations are highly recommended for all Thursday performances.
We also want to express our sincere thanks to all of you who were able to attend the baby shower for our dear Nicole, Joe and Baby Maya last Sunday and we are pleased to let you know that Maya is almost ready to go home from the hospital!. Thanks so very much - a great time was had by all who attended.
