As a young jazz musician who set out on the path of a performing artist career in the 1970s United States of America, Chris Burnett found that the historic days of paying dues under the tutelage of master musicians via jazz jam sessions had passed; and, the now common days of A&R development by way of the formal jazz studies programs at universities and music conservatories had not yet arrived. However, one incubator still existed in the form of professional US military bands, where a serious young artist could develop toward mastery of the craft and also make a living. Listening to his recorded work and live performances, one immediately recognizes that Chris Burnett has learned the lessons of this great musical tradition, and has now appropriately embarked upon sharing his own uniquely creative artistry.
Due to such a diverse range of professional experiences and exposure to various styles of music, Chris Burnett has developed into a mature artist with a new voice to contribute to modern jazz today. His influences range from the study of jazz masters such as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Ahmad Alaadeen, John Coltrane, Buster Williams, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Andrew Hill; to, classical composers like Joseph Schillinger, Eugene Bozza, Paul Creston and Jacques Ibert. So, it is little wonder that Chris Burnett rarely fits the typical stylistic categorizations that are often inherently applied to describe jazz artists today.
