Arturo O'Farrill Receives Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album

Arturo O'Farrill
Arturo O'Farrill, director of the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra, received a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for Song for Chico performed by Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Zoho Music (2008).

Woodrow Wilson in All About Jazz describes the album as a showcase for O'Farrill's skill as a leader and musician. He was the pianist on the album and composed one of the eight tracks. According to Wilkins, O'Farrill adopts various cultures and instruments into his music. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Harry Belafonte and many others and also directs the Chico O'Farrill Afro- Cuban Latin Jazz Band that preserves much of his late father's music.

The distinguished musician and composer will next conduct the Purchase Jazz Orchestra on March 12 at The Performing Arts Center at 7:30 PM in a concert titled Polishing the Gem: The Aztec Suite and Other Classics. Guest soloist is trumpet virtuoso Jon Faddis. “Aztec Suite" is a rarely-heard rendition of Chico O'Farrills work. For tickets call 914-251-6200 or go to artscenter.org.
