Anat Cohen - "Place & Time" CD Release Party - June, 9 2005
CD Release Party on June 9, 2005 at Sweet Rhythm Anat Cohen - “Place & Time" Anat Cohen's highly anticipated debut album as a leader, “Place & Time" was released on May 3, 2005. The CD release party will be on June 9, 2005 at Sweet Rhythm in New York City. Joining Anat for this evening will be Jason Lindner on piano, Gregory Hutchinson on drums and Vicente Archer on bass. This stunning album combines Anat's facility on tenor and soprano saxophone and clarinet with her expressive and personal compositions and emotionally charged musicality. Nat Hentoff says in his liner notes about “Place & Time": “Anat Cohen has the quality of all lasting jazz musicians. She has presence. From her first notes, she tells you who she is - and over time, she tells you where she's been in her life and travels."
David Franklin of Jazz Times says of “Place & Time" : “On tenor or soprano saxophone or clarinet, Cohen exhibits expressive tone, precise control and finesse, especially in the tender spots but also when she's stomping and wailing. And her virtuoso technique enables her to swing at breakneck tempos..."
“Place & Time" was the number one debut album on the CMJ charts and is rising in the JazzWeek charts every week. Tad Hendrickson of Jazz Week says: “Cohen is remarkably comfortable with the varied program and with the band, revealing a maturity not always heard on debuts." All Music Guide hails “Place & Time" as: “a very impressive debut."
Tel Aviv-born multi-reedist Anat Cohen has made quite a name for herself since her arrival in the U.S. to pursue her musical studies at Berklee in the mid '90's. Anat was recently acknowledged in the DownBeat Reader's Poll as one of the readers' favorite clarinetists. In addition to her extraordinary instrumental abilities on soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet and flute, she displays a natural ability to absorb, process, and uniquely interpret a culturally diverse variety of music. For the past six years, Anat has been a member of the Diva Jazz Orchestra (www.divajazz.com) and Five Play Jazz Quintet. Anat is featured on their latest CDs, “TNT: A Tommy Newsom Tribute” and “Five Play…Plus". While with Diva, Anat has had the opportunity to perform with guest artists such as Nancy Wilson, Dave Brubeck, Slide Hampton and Diane Schuur. Ms. Cohen is also an integral part of a group called Choro Ensemble (www.choroensemble.com), the only New York-based ensemble dedicated to the authentic instrumental choro tradition of Brazil. The group was a featured guest artist at the Apollo Theater with the Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and recently made their Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops.
