All About Jazz: New York - September 2004

In over two and a half years, it's amazing to think that only two jazz guitarists have graced our front cover (Barney Kessel in 2002 and, more recently, John Abercrombie in July 2004), well, three now with Bill Frisell. Of course, we have included many inside artist features on several guitar players over our 29 issue existence: from Jim Hall to James Emery to Charlie Hunter. But with such a rich tradition of guitar players who have contributed to this music, we wanted to dedicate this issue to the many fantastic individual guitarists that make New York and the jazz world as a whole just a better place to be. In addition to Frisell (who continues with saxophonist Joe Lovano and drummer Paul Motian into their second week residency at the Village Vanguard this month), we encourage you to check out the many guitarists whose names are generously sprinkled throughout our Event Calendar. In no particular order: Adam Rogers, Charlie Hunter, Brad Shepik, Jimmy Bruno, Mike Stern, Gary Lucas, Ken Hatfield, Joe Morris, Dave Stryker, Ben Monder, Jeff Parker, Mark Whitfield, Matt Munisteri, Steve Cardenas, Amanda Monaco, Paul Bollenbeck, Joe Cohn, Randy Johnston, James “Blood" Ulmer, Mary Halvorsen, Sheryl Bailey, Keith Ganz, Dom Minasi, Peter Leitch, John Scofield, Frank Vignola, Bern Nix, Joel Harrison, Brandon Ross, Marc Ribot, Ken Wessel, David Tronzo, Ty Cumbie and John Hart among others. Phew...!!!! All will be performing this month - as they say - at a jazz venue near you.

We also want you to start marking down the first Thursday of every month in your personal datebook, starting in October. We will be presenting a new concert series at Cornelia Street Caf
