January. The month to either start over or pick up from where we last left off from the end of 2004. We're all more than likely going back to work, but for those of you who are students going back to school, you might want to know that you don't necessarily have to wait until the next time you see your parents to help get you into those “big" jazz clubs with their seemingly inflated cover and drink minimum prices. You'll be surprised how a student ID can serve as a VIP pass at most of those “big" clubs on the right night at the right time. Catch some jazz veterans such as Lee Konitz (see Cover Story, pg.9) and Branford Marsalis (see Interview, pg.5) at more reasonable prices.

Iridium, Birdland, Blue Note and the Village Vanguard all offer half-price admissions for students second sets Sun-Thurs. (in addition, Iridium offers student prices for their third sets on Fri. and Sun.) Jazz at Lincoln Center's new nightclub, Dizzy's Club, last month hosted FREE “Jazz Battle" afternoon performances open to all ages, featuring such paired instrumentalists as alto saxophonists Wesell “Warmdaddy" Anderson vs. Antonio Hart and guitarists Mark Whitfield vs. Doug Wamble. On Sun., Tues. and Wed. the 9:30 pm set at Dizzy's Club is only $15 with a student ID and their after hours sets (usually around 12:30am) are only $5 with a valid student ID. At Jazz Standard, students get $5 off any set (subject to availability, usually the case with most clubs).

The Blue Note (this month's Club Profile, see pg.6) also continues their afternoon Jazz Education and Enrichment programs with their Master Class series for which students get half off. Past guests have included Gary Giddins, Kenny Werner and Jimmy Heath. Most shows at Cornelia Street Caf recognize student discounts. And right around the corner on Mondays, Sweet Rhythm hosts many talented student ensembles with their respective faculty members of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at The New School University. Students can also present their IDs here for discounted admission. Of course, we'd recommend to students to give all clubs a call in advance to verify their student discount information, as policies and regulations may always change (and restrictions may apply). But utilizing your student discount is certainly another aspect of life to take advantage of while you're still young (or at least a student)! So remember to show your stuff at the door.

Though we won't see you in class, we do hope to see you at the shows! A happy and jazz-filled 2005 to one and all...

Laurence Donohue-Greene & Andrey Henkin
