James Brown, Chick Corea, Bill Wyman, Abdullah Ibrahim, Cecil Taylor, Maceo Parker, McCoy Tyner, Dave Douglas and Carla Bley will enhance the 37th edition of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival
A great number of musicians have already been confirmed for the program of the 37th San Sebastian Jazz Festival that will take place from the 24th to the 29th of July.
. | | | | No doubt the star of the edition will be James Brown, living legend of soul known as the Godfather of Soul. His will be the closing concert; but until then many of the most interesting names in jazz will have played on the different stages of the Festival. Chick Corea among them, who will be playing as the opening act of a Tribute to the Spanish record label Nuevos Medios, important in the development of Flamenco Jazz. Obviously Corea will also play with the Spanish musicians.
Another name that will be at the Festival will be that of the South African piano player: Abdullah Ibrahim, who left an unforgettable evening in the memory of those who saw him years ago at the Plaza de la Trinidad and who will now be playing at the Kursaal Auditorium, the same place where Keith Jarrett or Pat Metheny had such a great success.
. | | | Bill Wyman, bass player and founder of the Rolling Stones, together with a band of British Rhythm & Blues legends, the Rhythm Kings, and the great musical tornado, Maceo Parker.
. | | | The San Sebastian Jazz Festival will also have a concert by Cecil Taylor, a personality that not only has been a model in the construction of of the Avant Garde Jazz movements, but also in the world of art in the last decades of the 20th Century. And as we are talking about piano players, we have to mention McCoy Tyner, as co leader of a cuartet together with Bobby Hutcherson, and Adrian Iaies, an argentinian and one of the main contributions of Argentina to jazz.
Continuing with the stream that we started years ago and that has had a great success among journalists and audiences, the Festival will have a series of concerts dedicated to an extraordinary musician, Dave Douglas, who is playing an important role in the evolution of today's jazz and will be introducing three different bands: The well known Tiny Bell Trio, a quartet where we will also find certain European musicians such as Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink and, finally, his new quintet with Chris Potter and Uri Caine, who will present his Bedrock 3. Also interesting will be the concerts of three bands from the well known New York label The Knitting Factory: Vibes, Bruknahm Project and Gutbucket, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the record company.
Electric Jazz will play an important role during this edition of the Festival. Proof of this is the Norwegian musician Nils Petter Molvaer father of this movement with his band Khmer. Besides, two Big Bands of great interest could not be missing: Carla Bley's Big Band and David Murray's Big Band with a line up of Cuban musicians. And an exotic and entertaining band such as the Cool Crooners of Bulawayo, from Zimbabwe, with their own personal point of view of Jazz vocals and their refreshing covers of the well known standards.
A very important number of Spanish jazz musicians will also be at the Festival, not only those playing at the Nuevos Medios 20th Anniversary Concert (Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Tino di Geraldo, Diego Amador and Diego Carrasco among others) but there will also be a Jam conducted by Perico Sambeat with 11 of the most interesting Spanish musicians, which is bound to be one of the main courses of this edition. Isaac Turienzo together with his trio will be playing four days on different stages.
There will be a new stage to be added to the Plaza de la Trinidad, Kursaal Congress Center and clubs, The Green Stage on the Zurriola beach, opened to a young and electric program, with long non stop sessions from the 24th to the 27th.
. | | Other concerts: Van Morrison, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian… | | | Waiting for the month of July, the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, together with the Kursaal Foundation and Donostia Kultura, presents two types of programs in our city. The first one, at the Kursaal Congress Center will have its highlight with the two Van Morrison concerts on the 23rd and the 24th of March, sold out within ten hours many weeks ago. Other important names are: Miguel Bose (June, 1); Pat Metheny Group (June 24); Ismael Lo (February 21); Taraf de Haidouks (March 3), Charlie Haden's Nocturne (May 2) and the Michael Nyman Band (May 23).
At the Gazteszena Hall, there will be or already have been the following musicians: Ernest Dawkins (January 22); the American-Mexican border singer Lila Downs (March 6); the Argentinean tango players Vale 4 (March 15); the iconoclasts Sex Mob (March 20); Madhavi Mudgal, the Indian dancer (April 4); the Cuban band Trío Tesis (April 10); Susheela Raman (April 26); the great bluesman John Hammond (May 7) and the unperishable Paul Motian with his International Sextet (May 29).
