WHO: The 25th annual Ford Detroit International Festival includes more than 60 national, local and student bands. The headliners include Aretha Franklin, Ramsey Lewis, Lou Rawls, Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Jon Faddis, Larry Coryell, Chico Hamilton, Jon Hendricks, Lenny White, Houston Person, Oscar Castro-Neves, Carl Allen & the Art of Elvin and the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes.
The 25th edition of the festival has two dedicatees: Elvin Jones, the Pontiac-born jazz innovator who died in May; and Robert McCabe, the festival's founder and now vice chairman of Music Hall, which currently produces the event.
WHEN: Noon-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; noon-9:30 p.m. Monday.
WHERE: Hart Plaza on the riverfront in downtown Detroit. Three major stages, plus the educational Jam Academy stage. COST: Free.
DIRECTIONS: Hart Plaza is at the foot of Woodward at East Jefferson, between Cobo Hall and the Renaissance Center. From I-75, take I-375 south to the Jefferson west exit. From M-10 (the Lodge), travel south until the freeway merges with Jefferson. You may also exit at Larned Street or Howard Street-Cobo Roof and look for parking.
PARKING: Secure parking is available at pay lots hear Hart Plaza, including the Cobo Arena Garage, Cobo Hall Garage, Cobo Roof Deck, Ford Underground Garage on East Jefferson and the Millennium Garage on West Congress. There is also free street parking within walking distance, though it's not always easy to land.
SHOPPING AND EATING: Festival T-shirts, hats, posters, CDs and other souvenirs will be sold. A promenade of craft booths manned by local merchants will run parallel to Jefferson. Festival merchandise is also available online at www.detroitjazzfest.com.
The lower level of Hart Plaza will feature booths offering American and ethnic cuisines. Vendors will also be selling food and drink on the upper level.
TELEVISION AND RADIO: There is no TV broadcast or live radio broadcast.
PAYING THE PIPER: Produced by Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, the festival is paid for by corporate sponsorship, individual donations and concession sales. This year the festival begins a “Jazz Fest Dollar Drive for 25" campaign in which festival-goers can donate $1 and receive a commemorative sticker. Volunteers will collect donations.
