22nd festival features our own Holly Cole and sounds from around the globe from July 11-19

ROM COOL JAZZ vocalists like Holly Cole and bebop legend Sheila Jordan to hot Arabic sounds from across the globe, the 2008 Atlantic Jazz Festival has a varied, international lineup for its 22nd year in Halifax, July 11 to 19.

Festival organizers officially announced this year's schedule at a media conference on Friday morning in the Halifax Holiday Inn Select's Commons Room, one of the fest's five main venues next month.

Artistic director Adam Fine unveiled a roster with a host of fresh faces and returning favourites, picked from the best of international, Canadian and East Coast jazz, roots and world musicians.

Mississippi-born blues and soul veteran Syl Johnson (Come On Sock It to Me, and the much-sampled Different Strokes), cutting edge New York pianist Pyeng Threadgill (daughter of composer and performer Henry Threadgill) and the 10-piece Argentinean tango ensemble Orquesta Tipica Imperial are just a few of the performers in the fest's multi-textured collage of acts.

“While some of our performers definitely reach into the realm of rock and pop, we prefer to feature artists who are emerging on the cusp of a particular genre or tradition," said Fine on Friday. “To that end, we like to feature a lot of musical fusions, acts who have connections with different types of sounds, like Arabic and rock, or latin and jazz."
